Darlene Carreau

Since December 2015, Darlene has been the Director General, Business Services at the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO).  In this role, she created a new team and established a centre of expertise in the Government of Canada on Intellectual Property (IP) business development and client services.  She led the design and delivery of Canada’s IP awareness and education program as well as CIPO’s overall service strategy.  In addition, she is responsible for strategic partnerships, stakeholder engagement, business development, CIPO communications, marketing and media relations, market and client research, and data dissemination.

From July 2018 to October 2018, Ms. Carreau served as Interim Assistant Commissioner of Patents and Director General, Patent Branch where she led a team of 550 employees and was responsible for directing all activities in the patent branch, including the

the examination and grant of patents in Canada and directing the development of the Canadian position on legislative, regulatory and policy issues.

From 2008 to 2015, Ms. Carreau was the Chairperson of the Trademarks Opposition Board and from 2003 to 2008 she was legal counsel with the Department of Justice.  From 1998 to 2003, she was a trademark associate lawyer in the Intellectual Property Group of Osler, Hoskin and Harcourt LLP.  

Ms. Carreau received her LL.B from the University of Ottawa in 1996 and her B. Soc. Sc. from the University of Ottawa in 1993. She was called to the bar of the Province of Ontario in 1998.  She is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada and a registered trademark agent in Canada.
