Scott Vasudev has been the Director of Patent Policy and International Affairs at the Canadian Intellectual Property Office for almost twenty years. During this time Scott has been responsible for leading the evolution of Canadian administrative patent law within both a national and global context. Scott and his team work to ensure that the various components of the Canadian patent framework function in an effective and legally compliant manner and achieve an appropriate balance between the rights of inventors and the interest of the public. Scott also supports the Commissioner of Patents and the Attorney General of Canada on patent litigation files.
Having obtained a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Carleton University, Scott began his patent career in 1993 as a Patent Classification Examiner and transitioned to a Project Officer responsible for the Patent Cooperation Treaty before assuming his current role within the Patent Branch. In a career spanning over 33 years, Scott has led or contributed to a number of initiatives, such as WIPO’s “Reform of the PCT” initiative, the establishment of CIPO an ISA/IPEA under the PCT, and the ratification of the Patent Law Treaty in Canada.
